Jill Scott, the daughter of Joyce Scott in Philadelphia Pennsylvania was born on April 4 April 1972. The family of Jill Scott consisted of both her maternal grandparents and mother. She is an only-child. Scott attended her school, the Philadelphia High School for Girls and after she graduated she was accepted into Temple University. She studied secondary education over her time at Temple University while working on two other jobs. She was hoping to be a English teacher at high school. After three years of being a teacher's aide and studying, her dream of becoming a high school English teacher came to a halt. The path she took to her career started as a spoken-word artist who performed her work during poetry readings. She then teamed up with Amir Quest Love Thompson from The Roots. You Got Me is the product of their partnership. At an Roots show she was spotted to be an artist. Her subsequent collaborations included Eric Benet Will Smith Common. She gained more knowledge of the stage when she was a part of the Canada tour of the Broadway show Rent. She was signed by the label's first artist.
